Feeling weak, dizzy, or exhausted from severe illness or heat? At LA Urgent Care, we offer intravenous (IV) fluid administration to quickly and effectively rehydrate your body and restore essential electrolytes.

When you are severely dehydrated or unable to keep fluids down due to vomiting, drinking water or sports drinks may not be enough. IV fluids deliver hydration and nutrients directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system for rapid and efficient relief. This is a fast-acting solution for a variety of conditions, often saving you a trip to the emergency room.

What Is IV Fluid Therapy?

Intravenous (IV) therapy is a medical procedure that administers specially formulated liquids directly into a vein. This method is the fastest way to replenish lost fluids, electrolytes, and nutrients, which are vital for every cell, tissue, and organ in your body.

The most common IV fluid we use is Normal Saline, a sterile solution of salt and water that is nearly identical to the concentration of fluid in your body. This makes it a highly effective and safe way to restore fluid volume and correct electrolyte imbalances.

Conditions We Treat with IV Fluids

IV fluid administration is an excellent treatment option for several conditions, including:

  • Severe Dehydration: Whether from excessive sweating, prolonged heat exposure, or simply not drinking enough water, severe dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and low blood pressure.
  • Vomiting and Diarrhea: When you are unable to keep fluids down, your body can lose a significant amount of water and electrolytes, which can be quickly replenished with IV fluids.
  • Heat Exhaustion: For individuals who have become overheated, IV hydration helps to cool the body and restore fluid balance more quickly than oral rehydration.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

Receiving IV fluids at our clinic is a simple, safe, and comfortable process.

  1. Assessment: Our provider will first assess your condition to determine if IV fluids are the right treatment for you.
  2. Placement: A small, sterile needle connected to a thin tube (catheter) will be inserted into a vein, typically in your arm or hand. You may feel a slight pinch during the insertion.
  3. Administration: Once the IV is in place, the bag of fluids will be hung from a stand, allowing the solution to slowly drip into your bloodstream. You can sit comfortably and relax while the fluids are administered. The process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.
  4. Relief: Many patients report feeling better and more energized within minutes or hours of receiving IV fluids as their body’s hydration and electrolyte balance is restored.
